250th Anniversary of the Declaration – Viewing of Declaration of Independence and Sharing of how the Document came to Westford
July 7 @ 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm
In 1776, Town Clerk Zaccheus Wright transcribed the document into the town minutes—a requirement of the Massachusetts Legislature and a lasting piece of Westford’s history.
To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, our current Town Clerk, Laurie Shaw, will display this historic document on the first floor of Town Hall (55 Main Street) throughout July during Town Hall hours. Activities for the whole family will be available, including a Declaration-themed scavenger hunt and word search.
Members of the Westford Historical Society will also be on hand to share the story of how the document came to Westford and the occasion of its first public reading to residents. The first day of the reading will be on July 7th. They will also be there on:
Tuesdays, July 7 & 21, 4:00–6:30 p.m.
Tuesdays, July 14 & 28, 4:30–8:00 p.m.
Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Westford’s transcribed Declaration will be displayed alongside an authentic replica of Ezekiel Russell’s 1776 Declaration of Independence. (Read why Russell’s Declaration is important here.)
