Westford Students Hold Mock Election
By Pam Holland
Westford students in the 3rd through 8th grades voted in a mock election in October. Assisted by the League of Women Voters, students at the Crisafulli and Day Elementary schools, and the Blanchard Middle School voted as part of the National Student/Parent Mock Election.
Westford students gave Charlie Baker 38% of their votes, Deval Patrick 25%, Jill Stein 19%, and Tim Cahill 17%. In comparison, Westford voters gave Charlie Baker 53% of the vote and Deval Patrick 39%.
The League was proud to help Westford students participate in the mock election. Students were encouraged to follow the same procedures as their parents. They registered to vote, checked in prior to receiving a ballot, voted in the town’s official voting booths (if their school was a precinct), and checked out before putting their ballot in the ballot box. The National Student/Parent Mock Election makes students and parents aware of the power of their ballot by actively involving them in campaigns and elections.
The League would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers that made the Mock Election such a success. Laura Dickey and Pam Holland were League coordinators at the schools and provided the information and encouragement to make their school’s Mock Election enjoyable and a learning experience for the students. The League would also like to thank Rina Caldwell, Ellen Harde, and Bob Price for helping at the schools during the Mock Election. We couldn’t have done it with out all of you!
