{"id":243,"date":"2009-03-31T16:24:40","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T20:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.westford.com\/lwv\/?page_id=243"},"modified":"2009-03-31T16:24:40","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T20:24:40","slug":"local-land-usenatural-resources-position-1980","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lwv.westford.org\/?page_id=243","title":{"rendered":"Local Land Use\/Natural Resources Position &#8211; 1980"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Planning for Westford\u2019s orderly growth and development is necessary to enhance the quality of life for its residents.\u00a0 We recognize the need to preserve the essential character and aesthetic appearance of the Town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The League will support:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strict enforcement of the Town bylaws<\/li>\n<li>Separation of residential, commercial, and industrial uses.<\/li>\n<li>The zoning technique of planned unit development.<\/li>\n<li>The zoning technique of cluster development for the following reasons:\u00a0 Preservation of open space; More efficient use of town resources; Reduced maintenance costs for the town; Possible reduction in home costs.<\/li>\n<li>Limiting extractive operations to industrial districts.<\/li>\n<li>Strict enforcement of earth removal bylaw.<\/li>\n<li>Strict regulations of nonconforming lots, uses, and structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Traffic patterns and the appearance of the commercial and industrial districts are of particular concern to League members, especially regarding signs, parking lots, landscaping, screening, and preserving open spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The League will support:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Planned commercial and industrial development, cluster rather than strip commercial and\/or industrial zoning.<\/li>\n<li>Effective buffer zones to separate differing uses.<\/li>\n<li>Effective buffer strips and screening in commercial and industrial zones.<\/li>\n<li>Sign restrictions and regulations which include sign permits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>League members believe it is important for Westford\u2019s present and future citizens to have ample space for passive and active recreation, as well as the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful view.\u00a0 The chance for us and our children to experience a natural environment is irreplaceable.\u00a0 Once paved over or built upon, an area is, for these purposes, gone forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Park and recreation areas contribute to the town\u2019s tax base by adding value to the surrounding properties and to the community as a whole.\u00a0 \u201cThe price tag of unfettered growth can turn out to be much greater than the cost of conservation.\u201d\u00a0 Quote from Mass Dept.
